How much emergency fund do I need?

Most financial experts recommend 3–6 months of essential expenses in a liquid, easily accessible account. The right amount depends on your situation. If you have a stable job, 2 dependents or fewer, and good employer benefits, 3 months may be sufficient. If you are a freelancer, self-employed, have dependents, work in a volatile industry, or have health considerations, 6–12 months is the safer target.

Essential expenses only — not your full lifestyle budget. Include rent/mortgage, groceries, utilities, insurance, transport, and debt minimum payments. Do not include dining out, subscriptions, or entertainment.
